The Local SEO Checklist Every Small Business Needs in 2026

A practical, no-fluff checklist to help your local business show up in the Google map pack and win more nearby customers.

If most of your customers come from your local area, ranking in Google’s “map pack”, the three businesses shown on the map for local searches, is one of the highest-ROI things you can do. Here is the checklist we use with every local client.

1. Nail your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single biggest local ranking factor you control. Make sure you:

  • Claim and verify the profile.
  • Choose the most specific primary category, plus relevant secondary ones.
  • Fill in every field: hours, services, attributes, and a keyword-aware description.
  • Add real, high-quality photos, and keep adding them.

2. Get your NAP consistent everywhere

Your Name, Address, and Phone number must match exactly across your website, GBP, and every directory. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and quietly suppress your rankings.

3. Earn (and respond to) reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call you. Build a simple, repeatable way to ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to every one, positive or negative.

4. Build local landing pages

If you serve multiple areas, give each one a genuinely useful page, not thin doorway pages. Speak to that location’s customers and their specific needs.

5. Keep your site fast and mobile-first

Most local searches happen on phones. A slow, clunky mobile site costs you rankings and customers. Aim for a sub-2-second load and a clean, tap-friendly layout.

The nice thing about local SEO is that the work sticks. A profile you fix in March is still bringing calls in September. If you’d rather hand the checklist to someone else, book a free call and we’ll go through it with you.
